Industrial Statistics Wing

Over the period of two decades, the State of Sikkim has witnessed a tremendous growth in the manufacturing sector due to the establishment of a number of industrial units and hydro electric plants. Today, Sikkim has a growing and dynamic economy fuelled by the establishment of a number of manufacturing units particularly pharmaceutical units, hydro electric plants, distilleries and breweries. The manufacturing and electricity sector alone accounts for over 50% of the state income of Sikkim. Therefore, statistics relating to this sector, is crucial for policy-making. Against this back drop, the Industrial Statistics Wing was established in order to compile and generate statistics related to Industries, Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises and for preparation of Index of Industrial Production.

In the Central Statistics Office, MoSPI, an Industrial Statistics Wing (ISW) has been established which provides technical support and guidance to the State Directorate of Economics & Statistics in their effort to prepare various indicators related to the industrial sector.

Index of Industrial Prodution (IIP)

The IIP is a composite and quantitative indicator which gives us an insight on the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sector of the State's economy. The first and foremost use of an index number lies in its ability to summarize the performance of a large number of sectors or segments of the economy in a single figure. Thus, the index numbers of industrial production shown with an industrial grouping enables comparisons to be made of changes in the output of different industries, between themselves and in relation to such other data on separate industries as employment, wages and earnings.

In India, the official compilation of IIP started with the base year 1937 by the Office of the Economic Advisor, Ministry of Commerce and Industry. With the establishment of the Central Statistics Organization (CSO) in 1951, the responsibility for compilation and publication of IIP was vested with CSO. Since then, the all India IIP is being released by the CSO as a monthly series.

Sikkim had lagged behind in this field of Statistics. However, with the preparation of the first IIP of Sikkim with base year 2011-12 for the FYs 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18, a new chapter has been added in the statistical activity of the State.
